A NEW MODEL FOR WORKFORCE HOUSING
Built to close the gap
Workforce housing requires a different approach—one grounded in local knowledge, close collaboration, disciplined execution, and long-term commitment.
The Essential Housing Fund brings these elements together to create high-quality homes for San Francisco’s workforce. We work with public agencies, community organizations, institutional partners, and other stakeholders to move complex housing opportunities from vision to reality.
Our goal is not simply to build more housing. It is to build the housing San Francisco needs most—homes that allow more of the people who serve the city to become part of its communities.
Powered by Fifth Space
The Fund is powered by Fifth Space, a San Francisco-based, vertically integrated real estate development and investment platform.
Fifth Space brings approximately 35 professionals to coordinate every stage of a project, from early planning and public-private collaboration through construction, delivery, and long-term operations.
The team’s experience includes workforce and multifamily housing, complex urban development, institutional investment, public-private partnerships, and long-term ownership. Its work at Potrero Power Station, including the Sophie Maxwell Building, provides a foundation of local experience and demonstrated execution upon which the Essential Housing Fund is being built.
From a proven model to a lasting platform
The Sophie Maxwell Building demonstrated that high-quality workforce housing can be delivered in San Francisco with speed, discipline, and strong demand.
The Essential Housing Fund is the next step: a dedicated platform designed to build on that experience and deliver workforce housing at greater scale.
